Taizhou

Taizhou is located in the middle of the coastal area of Zhejiang Province; the position of city center is latitude 28 degrees north and longitude 122 degrees east; it belongs to subtropical monsoon climate. The land area of Taizhou City is 9411 square kilometers and the shallow sea area is 80,000 square kilometers. Its population is 5,466,200. The urban area is made up of 3 districts: Jiaojiang, Huangyan and Luqiao, which have jurisdiction over the two county-level cities Linhai and Wenling as well as the four counties Yuhuan, Tiantai, Xianju and Sanmen. Taizhou has a coastline of 745 kilometers, accounting for 28% in Zhejiang Province. There are 6 counties (cities or districts) facing the East China Sea.
Taizhou is a city with a long history; as early as the New Stone Age, the Xiatang human civilization was born here. On the era when Emperor Qinshihuang was ruling China, Huipu Township was set up here; in the 2nd year of Shiyuan Era of Western Han Dynasty (85 B.C.), Huipu County was established here; in the 2nd year of Taiping Era of Wu at the Three Kingdoms Period (A.D.257), Linhai County was set up here and changed to Haizhou in the 4th year of Wude Era of Tang Dynasty (A.D.621) and the name was again altered to Taizhou in the next year, which was named after Tiantai Mountain within boarders. And the name of Taizhou was so called since then. After the New China was established, the organizational structure of administrative office was started. On August 22, 1994, as approved by the State Council, the Taizhou Area was revoked and the prefecture-level Taizhou City was established; the municipal government was located in Jiaojiang District and it was regarded as a combined coastal city. In 1999, the General Urbanization Plan of Zhejiang Province approved by the State Council confirmed Taizhou City as a big city in the structure of urbanization of Zhejiang Province as well as a class I economic subregion center. In the Notification on Printing and Issuing the Work Plan on Regional Planning of Yangtze River Delta issued by National Development and Reform Commission, Tiazhou is clarified as one of the 16 cities in the Yangtze River Delta.
Taizhou possesses a long coastline and good bay and it has always been the coastal gateway for foreign relations. As early as A.D.230, Sunquan who ruled the east Wu dispatched his generals Wei Wen and Zhuge to lead the army of more than 20,000 soldiers and set off from Zhang¡¯an (the current Zhang¡¯an at the northern bank of Haimen Port of Taizhou City) to manage Yizhou (current Taiwan), which marked that the mainland began to exercise jurisdiction over Taiwan. There are currently 21 ports in Taizhou City, which takes Haimen Port at Taizhou Bay, Jiantiao Port as Sanmen Bay and Damaiyu Port at Yueqing Bay as the main body. The Haimen Port at the urban area has a history of more than 1,000 years; as early as the time when Emperor Lizong was ruling Southern Song, there were Japanese merchant ships sailing in and out of the port and it has become an important marine trade port on the southeast coast of China since the nineteenth century. In 1989, the State Council approved Haimen Port as an open port of China. In 2001, the Ministry of Communications approved the ports of Taizhou City to be uniformly named as Taizhou Port and confirmed that Taizhou Port is a multifunctional, full dimensional and comprehensive modern international port which centers on Haimen Port Area and takes Damaiyu Port Area and Jiantiao Port Area as the southern and northern wings. The Haimen Port Area possesses straight coastline and open harbor basin with the planed strand line of 4,500 meters along the southern and northern banks; at present, there are 81 wharfs with 10,000-ton capacity; in which, there are 20 wharfs with 1,000~10,000-ton capacity; the annual operation capacity is 20 million tons and the international scheduled flight of containers has opened up. The Damaiyu Port Area is classified as a second class port. The Jiantiao Port Area used to be called ¡°important port to industry¡± by Mr. Sun Zhongshan and it was defined as the ¡°Orient 9th Fishery Port¡±. The depths of water of Damaiyu Port Area and Jiantiao Port Area are both over 10 meters; the water flows are quite gentle and slow here and the ports haven¡¯t been silted up through the years.
Currently, there are 120 different categories of berths for production, in which, there are four 10,000-ton berths; the annual operation capacity is 27.93 million tons and the domestic branchline flight of international containers has opened up. In 2006, all the ports of Taizhou City handled 30.27 million tons of cargo, in which: the foreign trade throughput was 1.82 million tons and there were 50,000 TEUs of foreign trade containers.
Taizhou Port is located on the southeast coast of Zhejiang and it is a combined port made up of six port areas: Damaiyu, Wenling, Haimen, Huangyan, Linhai and Jiantiao; it is a regional important port, a member of grain transfer, storage and transportation system in the national coastal port layout and the nearest port to Taiwan among all the first class open ports and the port groups in the Yangtze River Delta; it possesses the location advantage to develop shipping to Taiwan. It is currently a container feeder port and it has opened up the foreign trade container shipping route to Ningbo and 4 domestic trade container shipping routes to Yingkou, Tianjin, Quanzhou, etc. It handled 34 million tons of cargo and 56,000 TEUs in 2007.
The planned coastline of Taizhou Port is 96.23 kilometers, in which the deepwater coastline is 30.75 kilometers, spreading along Damaiyu, Haimen, Linhai (Toumen), Jiantiao, etc; especially, the Dachen Work Zone of Damaiyu Port Area and Haimen Port Area has possessed the conditions to build a 300,000-ton wharf. By 2007, Taizhou Port has 120 productive berths and has handled 3405 tons; in which: there are 350 tons of foreign trade goods, ranking the 23rd among 46 coastal ports above designated size. By the end of the 11th Five-Year Plan, it will be able to handle 50 million tons of cargo and 500,000 TEUs.
Taizhou Port has convenient collection and transmission system; it is connected with the national public road network through the provincial road, China National Highway 104, Tongsan Highway and Taizhou-Jinhua Highway. The public roads in this region are connected with Taizhou Huangyan Airport and the seaward collection and transmission is linked with rivers and oceans quite well. The approach channel of Dachen Work Zone can satisfy the need of 300,000-ton vessels entering or leaving the port and the approach channel of Damaiyu can satisfy the need of 100,000-ton vessels entering or leaving the port.
Taizhou Port is actively carrying out the domestic source based development strategy with port function differentiation, investment subject diversification and resource integration unification. It centers on the comprehensive development of port resources at Taizhou Bay, which mainly refers to the combined core port area taking Linhai (Toumen) Hub Port as the main body and Haimen Port Area (Dachen Shihua and Niutoujing Container Work Zone) as a component, continues to enhance the development and construction of Damaiyu Hub Port Area and coordinate and promote the construction of Wenling, Jiantiao and Huanglao port areas to finally form the structure of integrative growth.
